Comment: Very Handy - Beats Palm in my book Rating:
Having used a palm based OS for a few years, I found it limiting - limiting in text entry, windows look and feel applications, etc. I did research on Pocket PC's and narrowed my choices down to the V35 and Dell's X5. Dell's offering was just a bit bulkier then the V35 and since I wanted something easy to carry, I decided on the V35.
If you have Windows XP, save some time and frustration; you will need to download a new version of ActiveSync. It's easy to do and Viewsonic's tech support will walk you through it if desired.
After installing the new version, synching and download files is a breeze. I love the fact that you can download important Excel spreadsheets and Word documents so you have them right at your fingertips! You even have a powerpoint viewer (how cool is that!).
You have four different ways of inputing text - you will be comfortable with at least one.
I've easly downloaded pictures and music to a SD memory card, which makes this handy little machine very versatile. I know most of these features are available on all Pocket PC's. I just like the V35's form factor (slim and light)and extermely bright screen. Battery life is a bit on the light side, but not a limiting factor in my opinion. I even ran out of power once, but my data stayed intact.
One downside is if you want to purchase Viewsonic branded accessories, they're exteremly hard to find at your local store (and even on Amazon). I paid $199. which I think is a great deal. Not the fastest on the market, but plenty of power of business and personal use.
Comment: RAM shortage aside, this is the most bang for the buck! Rating:
Summery - If you are looking to enter the Pocket PC world, the ViewSonic V35 is the best low cost entry point.
It came down to the iPAQ 1910 and the ViewSonic V35 and I went with the ViewSonic. It had all the features I required and you can't bet the price. You will give up some RAM and a shorten battery life to the competition. But to me these where minor tradeoffs for great performance (larger processor), great screen, small size, light weight and it comes with a cradle (the iPAQ 1910 does not).
I had the device for over a week and my only complaint how the device fits into the cradle. It's a little shaky and not as good a fit as my old Palm VIIx. You just have to be extra carefully when docking.
There is not doubt in my mind that Pocket PC is the way to go. It is much more friendly than Palm and it has the interface and functionality that you are already familiar with your PC.
Comment: Piece of Crap Rating:
Granted, I didn't want to spend too much on one of these. I guess I kind of got what I paid for. There is a splotch on the screen that showed up just two months after receiving it. ViewSonic totally ignored me. The battery stinks. The screen freezes so I have to reset the dumb thing. I bought this back in July of 03. I hate it.
