Understanding Email Protocols

[Archived in Entry]

[BeConnected] Operation Gadget has an overview of email protocols useful for those who are considering a wireless email device/service like a BlackBerry or a smart phone. Three minutes well spent.

Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.

[BBHub] BlackBerry competitor palmOne LifeDrive UI, features revealed: Somewhat of a competitive threat because as we can see on a pre-release spec sheet (linked below) somehow obtained by the U.K. based education-related site Handheld Learning, the gadget is part PDA, part mobile music player, part digital camera and with nearly 4 GB of storage, part notebook computer in the body of a PDA.

http://bryanrieger.com [The Life of Bryan] When Marketing Gets Desperate...: On my way downtown today I passed by a very lonely fellow dressed in a Blackberry suit outside the Pacific Cellular/Rogers store on Pender Street. Not really sure who thought this was a great marketing idea as most people walking by seemed to try their very best to avoid talking or shaking hands with the animated device. Perhaps if they could have checked their email or made a call with an actual demo device they would have been more inclined to stop.

http://cultureaddict.blogspot.com [Manifest Density] Email, I.M., Blackberry? Screw it, let's go burn one...: This may be the single best piece of writing I have read in a long time. As one who suffers from the current Catch-22 between gadget mania and the desire for a "deeper existence" I completely comprehend this issue of Future Schlock (this link is not just for show; following it leads you to a second extraordinary piece on this issue). For those who don't wish to read the article in its entirety, here are some high points...

[Bleeding Edge] Graeme Samuel: unguided gadgetry: ineffectiveness of measures to stop it crushing the competition. This is his current gadget collection:A BlackBerry, which he uses for phone calls and email, and as a repository of the ACCC's media..., and personal email In his Canberra flat, a notebook linked to the ACCC by wireless LAN and VPNAt

[ The Gadget Files Tech Gadget & Gizmos Portal] Blackberry, Wireless Email Fuels Sharp PDA Growth: Gartner Inc reports a sharp increase in global PDA sales for the first quarter of 2005. Many have been predicting the death of PDAs, so the year over year increase of 25% (3.4m units) came as something of a surprise to the gadget world. The popular Blackberry device from Research in Motion (RIM)

[Gadgetguy.de] www.gadgetguy.de - The GadgetGuy: I have often complained in OpenBC that it would be nice to be able to sync your contacts with a service like Plaxo to track changes to your contacts.

http://www.belleliu.com [Belleliu.com] belleliu . com » Blog Archive » BlackBerry 7230: In short, it is a handheld specially designed for wireless email access. OK, I remember I probably had once said that I wouldn’t use any more handheld devices like Palm or PocketPC, so here are the excuses: first, this BlackBerry is the only viable and affordable option for wireless email access currently in the market. I don’t mind carrying around a Palm/PocketPC with me every day (which I did before), but it is such a hassle to hook it up online to just read a few emails. I have to either find a Wi-Fi spot or use a GPRS connection.

[Blog.tmcnet.com] VoIP Blog - VoIP News, Gadgets: Email distraction lowers IQ according to a recent British study. A study determined that distractions caused by email found that people who do frequent email or SMS suffer a 10-point IQ drop - more than twice the IQ drop caused by marijuana (4 pts). The study found the IQ of those who tried to juggle messages and work fell by 10 points -- the equivalent to missing a whole night's sleep
