Sharp Zaurus Review

[Archived in Entry, Sharp Zaurus Pda, Zaurus Pda]

ravnx on 2003/04/18:

„The street price is currently around $500 for the SL-5600. Sharp calls these devices Personal Mobile Tools, and if it were up to me I'd call the Zaurus, say, an "Ultra-Light Computer", but I'll use the term PDA here. The 5600 is an upgraded version of the 5500 which has been widely available for over a year, and the appearance is almost identical including the distinctive miniature keyboard which hides behind the quick button panel. The Zaurus is a very feature-rich device with plenty of power and expandability."“

Sharp Zaurus SL-5600 Review

„The only aspect I haven't tested to my satisfaction is wireless networking; I'll add a section in a week or so covering this, or treat it as a separate review of the wireless CF card I've ordered. The sections of this review are listed below: Packaging Design and Features The Display The Stylus Comparison to the SL-5500 The Operating System and Basic Navigation Memory The Keyboard Input options other than the keyboard Software overview Personal Information Management (PIM) Tools Office Tools (Hancom Word, Hancom Sheet) Other Tools (Image Pad, Text Editor, etc.) Multimedia Games The Email Client The Opera WWW Browser More Applications Battery life Linux comments Cradle, syncing and file transfer Summary Packaging The SL-5600 comes in a simple cardboard box with no clear plastic window. Just a few colour pictures of the device, the basic specs, and the clever Zaurus logo which looks like the Zorro logo from the old TV show.“

PDA Buyer's Guide Reviews: Linux PDAs, Sharp Zaurus, Yopy

„Zaurus SL-6000 Sharp is targeting enterprise buyers with this model, which looks like a super-sized version of the SL-5600. It's a powerful 400 MHz device with a CG Silicon 4" VGA display, WiFi (on the SL-6000L) and dual expansion slots. Like other SL-5000 series models, it has a thumb keyboard cleverly concealed underneath a slider.“

Sharp Zaurus c760 Review

„What makes the SL-C760 (and its siblings the SL-C750, SL-C700, SL-5600 andSL-5500 ) unique from other PDA’s on the market is the use of Linux, the open source based OS, called Linux OpenPDA. This is basically the same Linux that is used to run desktop and laptop computers with some modifications to allow for the smaller display and memory sizes.“

WiFi Insecurity

„From Sharp, the latest version of their Linux-based Zaurus PDA. The SL-C860 is an update of their SL-C760 and SL-C750 handhelds, and has a 400MHz processor, 128MB of RAM, and a 640x480 resolution LCD screen that swivels around to reveal a tiny keyboard. For whatever reason Sharp hasn't bothered to really market any of the handhelds in the Zaurus line in the States, and the SLC-860 will likely prove no different.“

„2003-11-26: PC world article about the new Zaurus SL-6000N, SL-6000W andSL-6000L in Japan. But when will Australia get these things? It's veryfrustrating having to wait for so long for these machines to hit the street.Does Sharp want us to buy these things or not?“

EPI, Intel, JTAG, XDB, software, Simulator, Debugger, XScale, EDB, PXA210, PXA250,

„The Intel® XScale™ Microarchitecture XDB Simulator is a fully functional simulator used to support development of system-on-chip (SoC) software designs. This functional simulator replicates the Intel® PXA250 applications processor, allowing software developers to develop and debug their applications when silicon is not available. Registers and peripherals are all simulated, providing an extremely accurate representation of how the application will perform when run on the processor.“

PDA Buyer's Guide Reviews: Toshiba e750 & e755 Pocket PC 2002

„How is it different from the Intel XScale PXA250 processor used in previous Pocket PCs? The PXA255 has a 200 MHz internal system bus, while the PXA250 has a 100 MHz system bus. This means the CPU can talk to the memory controller and LCD controller (graphics processor) 2x faster.“
