RSS Usability Issue

[Archived in Entry, Handspring Pda]

Doug Sauder on 2003/12/14:

„On the second issue, news aggregators are great for offline browsing. When I first got a Handspring Visor (PDA), I really liked AvantGo . I used it to read some of my favorite news sites while at the mall or elsewhere with the family. RSS is an AvantGo-like service.“

NewsGator Rocks for RSS

„So I'm just starting to use NewsGator for reading RSS feeds and so far I'm really impressed. I use Outlook to manage a lot of information and having the RSS feeds come into Outlook folders is key for me.“

RSS EXPLAINED CLEARLY

„Thanks to guest experts Rick Bruner , Dave Taylor and Greg Reinacker (of NewsGator.com) for their pithy responses to my questions. One of the attendees blogged it with a nice write up. Here's how Lee LeFever described the one-hour event.“

„It may work in Vox Lite and WinRSS but I have no way to test. Who else is on board? Scott Johnson of Feedster has expressed support, but hasn’t implemented“

A look at recent user level activity in the RSS world

„[Rory Perry's Weblog] One advantage of letting things pile up in your aggregator is that more efficient folks like Rory come along and organize stuff for you. I knew that eventually procrastination would become an important knowledge economy skill!“

Two types of aggregators

„If you are a content producer (i.e, you have a blog), it is notpossible to serve both audiences with a single RSS 0.91 feed. RSS 0.91 had one "slot" for a description.  This tended tofavor the online users of single page aggregators.  With RSS1.0 and 2.0, it became possible to address this need vianamespaces.  In fact, the most popular module that is used inboth versions to address this need ismod_content . The conventional usage pattern is to put the summary in thedescription and the full story in the content:encoded element.“ posted on 2004/07/28

Syndication News from Bill Kearney: Namespaces in simple RSS?

„The reality is that Winer managed to get a fair amount of momentum behind using RSS, a format started elsewhere. He's not the only one that put forth effort but he's due some credit for advancing the concept of RSS. It's got a certain 'brand value' behind it and one that's not easily discarded.“

Outlook 2003 Sucks Ass. Bigtime.

„NewsGator retrieves news from multiple sources such as weblogs and news sites that support the RSS syndication format, and integrates the news items into Outlook folders.News aggregators such as NewsGator are becoming more mainstream as more sites syndicate their content, and are changing the way people view the web. There are thousands of weblogs alone, with content covering nearly every subject area. "NewsGator has had a huge positive impact on my web experience," said Adam Howitt from Biolab, Inc.Other tools on the market require users to learn to use a new application to read weblogs and news articles; NewsGator leverages the experience many user“

Cook Computing: June 2003 Archives

„Someone with the right vision, investment, and marketing could have released a commercial-quality standalone Windows aggregator a year ago and established market presence in time for the explosion of interest in RSS. If it took Microsoft a year to crush them with a free aggregator then maybe in that year the 30-person company would have sold enough to get a decent initial return on the investment and a continuing, albeit reduced, income afterwards if they could innovate more rapidly than the gorilla. I'm not assuming that the 30 people would all be working full-time on this but that a company of this size would have sufficient mass to be able to work effectively in all the areas of implementation, testing, marketing, sales, etc.“

An Even Non-Funkier RSS 2 Template

„Publishing the press releases in RSS would help promotional information about a company to flow through the Net. Publishing in RSS would also make it easy for sector reports and VC portfolio company listings to display the latest releases from groups of companies. No specialized technology required: companies would use any of several blogging tools to author the press releases; VCs and sector reports could use any of several news aggregators.“

Palm and CE PDA device setup

„Thank you for your interest in putting JapanInYourPalm.com's useful information on your handheld device or PDA.  Just imagine how envious your friends and colleagues will be when you order and pronounce tekka-maki like a native at the sushi bar by reading from your handheld computer!  Did you ever think your handheld could be so useful?“

„To the great pleasure of many users, AvantGo has modified the policy that restricted access to custom channels (actually to entire domains) to only eight users. AvantGo staff members are now reviewing each channel on a case by case basis. If you have been blocked from your favorite channels, you might want to try signing up again.“

„A great deal of debate is going on in the PDA community over the future of the market and whether Palm can maintain its overwhelming market dominance or whether the PocketPC/WinCE competition will catch up. Almost all of the professional analysts whose job is to advise Fortune 1000-sized organizations (including large governmental agencies worldwide) predict that the Microsoft-based PDAs will overtake the Palms in the market.“
