Point & Connect Wireless Devices

[Archived in Entry, Handheld Computer, Handheld Wireless, Wireless Handheld]

paulgoodison on 2003/07/31:

„The camera-based system, developed by researchers at Sony's Interaction Laboratory in Tokyo, Japan, lets users instantly transfer data from a laptop or handheld computer to a device in close proximity connected to the same wireless network.“

Some slightly related:

Interview with Andy Clark

„One example would be the new generation of'software agents': packages of code that serve a specific user, perhaps searching for news-items, stocks or goods over the web, and that can learn about that user and tailor themselves to her specific needs over time. In a similar vein, imagine a PC that learnt what major functions you used most, and made them increasingly fast and efficient (at the expense of those that you don't use). In each case, the tool becomes tailored to the individual by a kind of'mutual learning'.“

UAV navigation

„Privacy worries are now raised with the deployment of (or even announcement of a plan to deploy) location-sensing technologies, or technologies like RFID that can be used to pinpoint the locations of devices (see for example this recent Wired News piece, and this article in Network World Fusion, on RFID). But travel services are one area where people have tended to demonstrate a willingness to trade potential privacy loss for greater security. Fastpass is a paradigmatic example; so too is OnStar, the GM system that tracks your car's location and provides assistance if you break down.“

Research report 2003: Multimedia Transmissions

„Communication of researchers working on large projects often involves multi-part sessions where each participant can simultaneously exchange information with a number of others. One possible implementation of multidirectional transmission is multicast. It can be described as a family of protocols designed to provide management of a communicating group (group creation, login and logout of group members, etc.) and routing of data packets.“

AA4GA idea - ARRL Help?

„More than one respondent observed that the danger to narrowing the IFfilters to anything beyond 500 Hz is one of becoming, as Tree, N6TR, put it"too sharp." Contrary to what may be conventional wisdom about filtering, you can be too narrow and consequently "will start missing people callingoff frequency" (N6TR), will have to "be very careful to tune the RIT slowlyand widely+/- 200 Hz after a cq to pick up the off-frequency" (K6LL). K3RA("looong time op at W3LPL") observed: "Independent of the mfg., I havefound that 250 HZ filters are too narrow for contesting. I replaced thepair of 250 Hz filters with 500 Hz filters." Even when tuning for otherstations, Rol says that "the 250 Hz jobs just cause you to tune by thestations too fast." Rol's final words fairly well sum up the consensus on250 Hz filters for contesting: "Tune the DX with 500, then switch to 250 onthe rare occasion the narrower bandwidth is needed.“

Hypnagogic Highway: January 2004 Archives

„In his own afterword Burgess states that like Orwell he did not take into account the basic commonsense and decency of the working man. This commonsense and decency which would not allow either nightmares to come to pass. 20 years have passed since this book first appeared, and the future is quite different.“

LifeSpirit Congregational Church Kathy Greene Fucetola

„A good example of the knowledge we are going to need in these times is what we needed to decipher about the overriding frequency that we had just measured here at LifeSpirit Center. The new BioGenesis program we brought back from the 6th Annual BioAcoustics Conference proved so sensitive that it found a frequency that was overwhelming our energetics. It took a while but we isolated it -- from an old HiFi!“

NTIA Comments, WT Docket No. 96-86

„NTIA supports the second harmonic levels established by the Commission for public safety equipment: mobile units must meet a minimum second harmonic suppression standard in the frequency range of 1559-1605 MHz of 90 dB down from the maximum effective radiated power of the carrier; and handhelds and portable units must meet a minimum second harmonic suppression standard in the frequency range of 1559-1605 MHz of 80 dB down from the maximum effective radiated power of the carrier. NTIA believes that these levels should not only apply to second harmonic emissions, but to all spurious emissions including second harmonics within the 1559-1605 MHz band.“
