PlayStation 3 can scale after all
[Archived in Entry]
[TechMunch, tech news munnnched”¦] The PlayStation 3's hardware scaling capabilities (or lack thereof) have been a serious point of contention since word first got out of the console's potential shortcoming, which left owners of HDTVs of a certain resolution unable to use their sets to their fullest potential with the console in its current state and unsure they'd ever be able to do so. Well, it looks like Sony may have a few tricks up its sleeve, with Beyond3D reporting that the company's latest software development kit includes measures that game makers can take in order to implement "hardware accelerated horizontal scaling" in their titles, ensuring that they'll always look their best, even on 1080i sets.

Joystiq: While it's easy (and fun) to chalk this up to throwing in the old PR towel amidst a recent spate of spin-proof doozies, the burn out rate in the PR industry is high. After working for one company in one position for ten years, when Sony does comment on her departure, she'll have left to spend more time with her family, or pursue other avenues. (via Cosmos)
PlayStation Team: It's still up to developers to take the feature all the way, but the enhancement already decreases the memory footprint left by less elegant upscaling techniques. It might appear that a secret piece of hardware is slowly being "unlocked" here, but a more likely explanation is simply that Sony is slowly but surely tweaking their development software (and the way it utilizes the existing PS3 hardware) to enable proper scaling functionality in lieu of an obvious and dedicated scaler chip. Echohammer419: Wheww...what a night at Wal-Mart. I've never seen somany people sitting in one place, in such eager anticipation to waggle theirarms around for hours on end (I jest...). After clocking in Fridayevening, I raced to my department to check out our PS3 set-up. It'svery...odd and retarded if you ask me. The PS3 demo unit is located inthe PS2 gamecase, while the PS3 games are on an endcap, with a PS3 standingup-right, displaying some video, but not playable. Trust me, it looks asconfusing as it sounds. Many times during my shift Friday, I had to tellpeople that the demo unit was a good 20 feet away from the actual games. Anyway, from what my colleagues told me, we received 6 units. Nice oneSony...force feed consumers your Blu-ray format, and make your base suffer withgreater shortages than the 360 (just wait and see). No wonder why your PS3 won't support 1080i (must read: here) (via Cosmos)
Kurt's Thoughts: While it's not all of Sony's fault, they have done little to apologize for their delays and arrogant statements. It's a bad trend that they've started, and the more they continue the more we'll be seeing article after article on Gamespot.... (via Cosmos)

My Gadget Info: Aside from a PlayStation 3 and a desire to further integrate it into your home theater setup, you’ll need a PSX/PS2 Controller-to-USB adapter as well as an original Sony DVD remote for the PS2 (model SCPH-10172) with external IR receiver (model SCPH-10160). Of course, the aforementioned remote should prove trickiest to find, as the current models lack that crucial external receiver to account for the built-in version found in the slim PS2 units. Engadget: Those looking to dictate your PS3 with that (presumably costly) universal IR remote, take heart, as the clever folks at Remote Central have whipped up a way to add infrared functionality to your IR-less machine. [Kanai.net] Gen Kanai weblog: Sony Connect Player fiasco: Well I don't know where to start my new Sony NW-A3000 arrived this afternoon, aftr reading this weblog I thought f**K it in for a penny in for a pound, loaded connect software ver 1.0.02 then let it upgrade to version 1.0.04.16100, next I updated the firmware on the NW-A3000 from ver2 to version 3 from right out the box, so needless to say when I imported my mp3's using connect software bang 480 mp3's rattled onto my player like no tomorrow, no freezing, no lockups so the only thing I have'nt tried is ripping CD's but I use Exact Copy with Lame to make my mp3's, but looking for a way to stop sony converting my mp3's when putting them on my player, so as of having 2 or 3 hours putting on albums and deleting them off again my connect software and player seems to be sot on, let you know about putting mp3's on the player without sony converting them (My NW-A3000 Rocks)
