Review of "Java Development on PDAs" (#)

„I don't want to be overly critical here since there is a burden on authors of technical works to make sure that important sections of the API are covered, however I find I am not really able to take in more than trivial amounts of code from the page of a book (I need to be running it and making changes to bits before I understand it). The screen-shots from the PDA help here, but really I wanted more from something in book form. Ideally I would like to see a paragraph or two on the pitfalls and advantages of using each kind of UI component in a PDA setting. Even better would be a sample project, where we work through two possible user interface solutions, one designed without much thought on the constraints of the PDA and one designed with the PDA in mind.“

Reading blogs on your Palm (#)

„As I noted in an earlier post, I bought myself a Palm M130 as a present to myself in starting my new life as an independant consultant. It's my first PDA and I went for the cheapest model I could afford that was still expandable and offered a decent colour screen. I had resisted getting one for a long time, but finally broke down and got one, not least of which was because I've been involved with discussions about website accessibility for too long not to actually try and access websites through an alterrnate device. I've used Jaws and other screen readers, but never a PDA or cell phone, and I like to walk the talk when I can.“

Writing the living web (#)

„built-in video camera). I find I'm doing a lot more note taking and reading with my PDA now that I don't have to squint and hold the screen 3 inches from my nose if I'm to read anything. Sony recently announced that they will be releasing Nx70 compatible memory cards, which will reach up to a 1 gig capacity . This is most impressive BUT the current 880.00 USD price tag will probably make a lot of consumers think twice before running out to their local Sony dealer.“

Using slow synchronization flash (#)

„In a nutshell, the problem was this: (1) If I used the camera's flash, metering on the whole scene, the area surrounding the PDA's screen came out good, but the screen itself appeared dull and dark. (2) If I shot the item without flash, metering on the screen, the screen came out bright, but the rest of the shot came out underexposed and lost detail.“

Zodiac 2 Review (#)

„What really surprised me is how natural it feels to hold a landscape oriented PDA screen. Before my Zodiac arrived, I had anticipated that I would be pining for the old portrait style screen within a short time, and would most likely switch the Zodiac's screen to that orientation. But, that was not the case, and I soon took to the new look.“

Preventing email harvesting (#)

„While it is future compatible, it has three problems—you must create an image and put the email address in your stylesheet, the address cannot be copied and pasted into a mail client unless you are using Opera (or a CSS3 browser), and people using alternative browsers (screen reader, lynxs, many pda's) will not see it unless their browser supports CSS3.“

Cliè (#)

„The only drawback of flipping the screen around to look like a traditional PDA is that you lose the four function buttons and the arrow keys. (But not the jog dial, which can be used like the arrows.) This is necessary, though, because of the size of the screen, which is bigger than most pams.“

Online Learning - Grab bag (#)

„M-learning comes to the tiny screenTo everyone who disdains phone-learning or PDA-learning because the form factor is too small, get over it. Mobile devices no more have to carry all the content than computers had to mediate all eLearning. Phones may augment learning with tips, reminders, quizzes, and short reinforcers.“

PalmBlogging, mo:Blogging and RSS Revisited (#)

„Overall, I tend to use the Moveable Type web front end to palmblog, but it's a very rudimentary entry mechanisim and not a comfortable tool. MT just isn't optimized for the Palm or any other PDA screen. That's one reason I added a Portable Digital Common Sense page quite some time ago.“

First PDA post (#)

„But the web browser is pretty darn nice - and the PDA screen is pretty darn big. I can actually browse the NY Times with absolutely no problems over the wireless connection. I also have an RSS reader for the PDA which works like a charm.“

Killer Combo: Treo 600 & RSS Reader for Palm OS (#)

„One caution: The Connected PDA reported an initial screen rendering problem with Hand/RSS on the Treo 600, but Stand Alone sent an immediate fix via e-mail. Now that kind of support is worthy of giving a hand. “

ZDNET biased review of PALM's Tungsten C? (#)

„Consider this comment: "The gap between Palms and Pocket PCs just got narrower. Pocket PCs spent some time at the lead of the PDA pack in terms of screen quality, processor speed, and onboard RAM." “

UpToDate 11.3 (#)

„The speed is better then I expected. The structure of UpToDate is perfect for a small PDA screen. If you have a Pocket PC with Compact Flash expansion, buy a 1 Gigabyte card and go for it.“
