PDA sales plummeting

„Hmmm. With global sales of handheld computers down 9 percent in one report, 12 percent in another, we can understand why Palm has dropped prices on its most popular models lately and is delaying announcements on what telcom carriers will take its soon-to-be-released Tungsten W combination PDA/phone. Palm was expected to tell us that Tuesday but has pushed it back for a week or so. The Tungsten W was promised for delivery next month.“

„I still think the long term results are this: Sony will eventually buy PalmSource outright, drop Symbian and produce smart phones based on that OS competing with SonyEricsson in the smart phone market. This doesn't make sense for Sony to do it, but I bet you they will and target different geographic regions doing it - there are already many Sony phones you can't get in the West. God knows what PalmOne will do - the market for PDAs is drying up so fast, even with a big hit they're going to have a tough time competing.“http://www.russellbeattie.com/notebook/ 1007713.html - Cached
„Matt argued that while you can do many things with the current batch of PDAs out there, it's more or less "doing it with a PDA because you can" rather than "doing it with a PDA because it is better or easier". Web browsing is terrible, email is passable (but still limited and done by mainly über-geeks) and just about anything you can name as being "doable" on a PDA over a laptop is much more "make work" for the PDA than something a PDA can excel at and do better than a small, light, fast-waking, long-lasting wireless laptop (such as a 12" Powerbook, or what have you).“http://www.rohdesign.com/weblog/archives/ 000293.html - Cached
