February 2001

„I'm a rather geeky individual, so I run Zonealarm2 firewall on my Internet-connected machines (a real neat program, by the way). Anyway, yesterday I noticed some odd activity in my firewall logs. About ten requests from different IPs were trying to connect to port 7800 on my main machine, which is odd, as I didn't remember setting up any servers on that port (I'm also a server nut, too):-)Naturally, being familiar with programs like NetBus and Back Oriface, I assumed that I was being port-scanned for those different daemons' presence (for those of you that don't know, port #s below 1024 are reserved for FTP, web and other "high-security-clearance" servers.“

Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter - January 19, 2004

„I hope to collect various bits of information that cross my desk and appear on my screen every week. Some of these items may be considered "news items" concerning events and happenings of interest to computer-owning genealogists. Some other items will be mini press releases about new genealogy software or other products and services that have just become available.“

Gadgetry - No End in Sight

„When I first spotted NEC's USB flash drive, my first question was, can I install programmes like Eudora on it so I can run my email from any machine? Answer, possibly, but Forward Solutions, now has a USB memory stick called the Migo that takes your current email, calendar, and Outlook contact data, your recently-used files, desktop preferences and Internet favorites, and copies them all on to the same stick, encrypted. You stick the stick into any computer, and that machine becomes a clone of your PC.“

Migo review

„So I got a Migo yesterday. Talked to the company that wrote the software that runs on it. I am intrigued by the idea that I could take my desktop with me on a USB keychain dongle.“

Interesting Trends: Knoppix, USB Flash, OceanStore and RDF

„Migo are already doing clever things by caching personalization information like favorites, etc. Then there is “ibutton’:http://www.ibutton.com/pki.html which throws a Public key certificate on the fob. Given that USB 2.0 is everywhere and fast, I know understand what a smart card is.“
