Palm To Buy Back PalmSource?
[Archived in Entry, PalmOne, PalmOne]
[Gadget News] The struggling software company was split from Palm back in 2003 creating separate hardware and software companies. While Palm (then called PalmOne) continued to have some success, PalmSource who are responsible for the development of the Palm OS have gone into a continuous decline.

[Tam Hanna's Palm OS Blog] Why PalmSource had to cut the line on garnet: PalmOne would never have gone so far in their Garnet pimping mania, the LifeDrive would run Cobalt and could multitask in a true way! Developers would be rid of the segmentation problem(I beleive this is one of the main reasons why many opensource projects port over to PocketPC but not to Palm OS) and could create true ARM applications without the 68k glue!
[Blogs.palmsource.com] PalmSource Mobile Summit & DevCon 2005 | May 24 - 26, 2005 | Palm ...: "I have a Palm OS app currently distributed through a major carrier--they 'own' the customer data and I 'own' the customer service/tech support for the app. I am interested in participating in a best practices discussion on how to work with customers (customer support, upgrades, registration issues) when you have no record of who the customer is."
[Blogs.pcworld.com] Today @ PC World - Goodbye PalmOne, Hello Palm, Goodbye Dave: Since people never stopped calling the devices Palms, this makes a lot of sense--although what the Palm OS, which PalmSource develops and licenses, will be called remains to be seen. The agreement between the two companies allows for a four-year transition period during which PalmSource and its licensees will be granted "certain rights" to the brand, which I take to mean that the OS will still be called Palm for a while.
[Blog.tmcnet.com] PalmOne Buys Palm Name from PalmSource: If I'm reading all this correctly, PalmOne just bought the name 'Palm' from PalmSource, which means they'll be known as 'Palm' and PalmSource will be taking on a new name. It cost PalmOne something like $30 million to secure the name, so I guess they think that's an important part of their strategy, even though PalmOne doesn't make the Palm OS.
[Tamspalm.blogspot.com] Tam Hanna's Palm OS Blog: PalmOne and PocketPC=death: If PalmOne is really working together with Dell on this one, the engineers of the latter company will definitely attempt to give their child a bit of the Dell precision. PalmOne's engineering guys will hopefuly learn more about engineering there(hopefully they include riveting connections;-)), and this knowledge should flow into the Palm OS devices too.
[Infoworld.com] PalmOne officially becomes Palm | InfoWorld | News | 2005-07-14 ...: The latest name change follows PalmOne's announcement in May that it had agreed to pay PalmSource $30 million for full rights to the Palm brand name. The Palm brand name had been co-owned by PalmOne and PalmSource since PalmSource was spun off in October 2003.
