Optimized for Pocket PC [well iPaq 1945 anyway]

[Archived in Entry, Handheld Device]

TheNiteOwl on 2004/01/05:

„Yes I have designed a blog page so that you may view the content of this blog using a small handheld device. Now I used an iPaq 1945 to view the pages so it is really optimized for it. However;...“

HP iPAQ 4355 Pocket PC Review

„Sitting right on the shelf next to the TG-50 at CompUSA was HP’s brand new iPAQ 4355.  For some reason, I had completely missed any mention of this PDA on the web.  Upon closer inspection, I saw that the 4355 had both Bluetooth and WiFi built in.  It also appeared to be very compact, even more so than the TG-50 sitting next to it.  And low-and-behold, the bottom 1/3rd of the 4355 had a built in thumb keyboard.  A Pocket PC with a keyboard!  In a frenzy of gear lust, I bought it right there on the spot. “

Zayo A600 Pocket PC Review

„That's the little tune that I began humming to mySony CLIÉ NR70V soon after I first laid my hands on the Razor Zayo Pocket PC. Now, before you all start rolling your eyes and say "oh boy, there she goes again, back to the Pocket PC...",  I'll have you know that I'm not the only one ready to hop back into the Pocket PC camp. Right Judie?“

PDA Buyer's Guide: buying hints and tips: Comparing Palm vs. Pocket PC

„Pocket PCs cost $249 to $699, but you get a very nice color display, audio playback and recording (MP3 too!), an XScale or other ARM family processor running at 200, 300 or 400 MHz and 32 to 128 megs of RAM (memory). The iPAQ 5555 and Toshiba e805 are the only Pocket PCs with 128 megs of built-in memory, while most mid-priced Pocket PCs have 64 megs of RAM.“

The release date is still unknown but more information and pictures are available:“

Linux on Pocket PCs

„The iPAQ, while a nice piece of hardware, is totally useless in my environment. The cradle sync only works with Windows, and this particular model doesn't have a Linux OS ready yet for reflashing the ROM. Wifi could have been a possibility, and theoretically it is possible to do ad-hoc or peer-to-peer networking with it, but no one I've come across (including HP techs) has managed to make it work.“ posted on 2004/07/28

PDAntic Blog

„Dell has sold PalmOS devices through their online and catalog sales, but this will be the first time that they've sold a device that has been specifically designed for and labeled as a Dell handheld. Dell's strategy will apparently be to provide a device that has "iPaq-like" capablities at a price that undercuts HP/Compaq's product by $200. This could make for a price war in the handheld business, which could be great for consumers but put some vendors out of the business.“

„Unveiling a new low-priced Dell Pocket PC (the $199 Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC that makes powerful handheld computing available to a far broader audience), Gates predicted this shift would drive tremendous growth in the technology industry. Gates also announced new OEM partners for Windows® XP Media Center Edition; revealed the official launch date for Windows Powered Smart Displays; highlighted Microsoft's newest servers and development tools; and announced a new Web service for information workers.“

Handhelds you'll always want to hold

„The zodiac from startup Tapwave shows how far handheld diversity has come. It's based on Palm software, but it's really a game console aimed at twentysomethings more interested in playing Doom than in planning schedules. At $300 with 32 megabytes of memory and $400 with 128 MB, the zodiac features a brilliant screen much bigger than Nintendo (NTDOY )'s Game Boy Advance or the new Nokia (NOK ) N-Gage (page 130), two four-way control buttons, 3-D graphics, and games from such companies as id Software.“
