Is Microsoft abandoning the Pocket PC? (#)

„Given the company's recent focus on their new Smartphone operating system, Ed Hardy over at Brighthand wonders if Microsoft is still committed to the Pocket PC?During the recent Microsoft Professional Developers Conference, a panel discussion was held on ways to advance mobile computing. When an attendee asked what the future of Pocket PC was, a Microsoft employee answered "None." While the other Microsoft employees on the panel backed off that stark statement, it was clear that they believed there wasn't much room between Tablet PCs and smart phones. Can you really blame them though? PDA sales are flat, and it seems pretty clear that the future for mobile devices or whatever is with wireless.“

So long, PocketPC, hello WM2003SPocketPC (#)

„Also, considering that only two revs ago PocketPC was Windows CE, we could get to the conclusion that their branding wasn't working. Mobile devices are proliferating in type, and this new rev of MS's handheld OS aims to combine both the PocketPC and Smartphone OSes under one brand, among other things. What's notable about this is the implied convergence that Microsoft sees as handhelds acquire phone functions, and viceversa. Note, however, that only the "Windows Mobile 2003 Software" part is what is generic to both PocketPC and Smartphone.“

Pocket PC Stagnation? (#)

„Last week I came across two highly interesting tidbits that lead me to believe that Pocket PC platform may be getting a bit lost in the shuffle over at Microsoft. I don't think Pocket PC is going away, but rather that Microsoft may be looking to greener pastures like their new Smartphone platform or Tablet PC platform. I'm wondering now if Pocket PC devices are being squeezed out at the MS money trough, especially if articles like The Death of the Handheld Computer are being read and believed at Microsoft Mobile headquarters.“

Reinventing The Wheel (#)

„You may remember the iPod for the Pocket PC I blogged about. Well, there's more news on that front: Last week MacCentral brought readers news of pBop, an MP3 software application aimed at users of Microsoft Pocket PC-based PDAs that looked amazingly like Apple's iPod. Since our report ran, the software's developers, StarBrite Solutions, have pulled pBop from distribution completely. "Due to legal pressure from Apple we are no longer able to distribute this application," says a notice on the...“

Review of Six RSS Readers (#)

„Review of Six RSS Readers I’ve talked several times (and in several places) about the way that RSS readers offer methods for managing information flow in the datacloud (where “authorship” gives way to “symbolic-analytic work”: the rearrangement, filtering, and recombination of information in modern dataclouds). The RSS browser I use to skim feeds and post to Datacloud is Ranchero’s NetNewsWire, an OS X program LockerGnome Bytes has posted a review of RSS readers for other platforms (including one for PocketPC).“

Video surveillance on your Pocket PC (#)

„Axis Communications is making science fiction a reality with its new Axis Camera Explorer (ACE) for Pocket PC 2002 . The software can be used to remotely access an Axis network video camera while on the go. Security personnel are the main customer for the project, with Axis envisioning mall security types monitoring rowdy teens in the food court while policing the arcade.“

My Palm Vx has just (#)

„I might end up with a re-furbed Visor or Palm just to get through the next few months. I wish I had $800 to buy a new whizzy Pocket PC and $100 a month to make it a completely wireless node on the Verizon network. But...I just can't see getting that much return from the investment. I wish I had that $700 back I payed for the crap OmniSky stuff last year.“

Trust but Verify (#)

„Just a month ago, I bought a 256mb Secure Digital memory card. After all, I'd just bought a new Pocket PC and they take SD cards. Prior to that I'd picked up a couple of extra sets of NiMH AA batteries. They were a good deal and we always need AAs, right?“
