Mapping the World

[Archived in Entry, Handheld Wireless, Wireless Handheld]

Mapping the World Jamais Cascio on 2004/01/12:

„MUDLondon is accessible over instant-messaging clients Jabber and AIM -- the latter meaning that a number of wireless handheld devices can talk to it.“

Handheld Devices for Ubiquitous Learning - Overview

„This WebPage provides an overview of the Handheld Devices for Ubiquitous Learning Project (HDUL), the promise of ubiquitous computing, a brief history of handheld computers, an overview of wireless handheld devices, exemplar examples of educational software designed for handhelds, general information about probeware and peripherals, and exemplar uses of handhelds in education. Please use the diagram below to navigate through the page.“

Intersections: Mapping China

„So, in Australia for example, there are street maps organised around residential districts and roads, in recognition of a suburban imaginary coupled with a frontier attachment to the ubiquitous and omnipresent car. In these maps space is inscribed through the obliteration of the landscape by modes of transport, land ownership in quarter acre blocks, and an overriding sense of anonymity. There are also Aboriginal maps, which come before the metrics of colonial mapping and seek to forge a pictorial relationship between traditional histories of place, and the aspect of the landscape - as well as charting the lands specific to different tribal groups.“

Design Observer: writings about design & culture: Culture Is Not Always Popular:    AIGA National Design Conference

„The consensus was that AIGA should help put design center stage and, on some levels, this desire has largely been fulfilled: today, less than 10 years later, design is generally acknowledged as a ubiquitous element in contemporary culture.“

Anne Galloway | Resonances & Everyday Life: Ubiquitous Computing & the City (Draft)

„In the late 1980s, researchers at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) moved away from personal computing - which they understood as forcing computers to the centre of our attention - and towards what they called ubiquitous computing, or Ubicomp, which 'takes into account the natural human environment and allows the computers themselves to vanish into the background' (Weiser, 1991: 1). In other words, they were interested in 'invisible' computers that would allow us to focus on life beyond computational devices. According to Weiser, not only would ubiquitous computing liberate us from the constraints of desktop computing, it would free us from equally isolating immersive and simulated virtual reality environments.“

the future of cooperation

„Last week I attended a stimulating conference with the somewhat unwieldy title "Space, Place and Ubiquitous Technology: The Cybernomadic Experience", produced by the fine folks at the Institute for the Future . The central premise of the session was that the emergence of ubiquitous and connective technologies (our usual suspects such as wireless networks, physical and digital tagging, location and context awareness, personal and embedded devices, sensor nets, flexible displays etc) creates dislocations and transformations in the way we experience and interact with places and spaces in the physical world. Through research, observational work and analysis (some of which is nicely documented in raw form on this blog ), IFTF developed a series of insights and implications which became the core material for the conference.“

Smart Mobs: Bluejacking as a Marketing Channel

„Smart mobs emerge when communication and computing technologies amplify human talents for cooperation. The impacts of smart mob technology already appear to be both beneficial and destructive.“
