Learning in Hand: Observations
[Archived in Entry, Handheld Palm, Palm Handheld]

„My class is coming up on the end of the second week in which each student has been provided with a Palm M130 and Palm keyboard . I've been quite impressed with exactly how quickly some students have picked up using the handheld and the Graffiti for inputing text. At the confrences that I attended, they all said how quickly students, especially young students, pick this up and I did a nice little head nod of agreement but never would have expected just how fast.“

Some slightly related:
„Many students have problems generating responses for their double-entry journals. To ease them into the process, I give them a list of possible responses. They can include, but are not limited to, one or more of the following: a paraphrase of a complex segment of text a possible explanation of a confusing material a main idea from the resource and why it is important a strong positive or negative reaction and an explanation of that reaction a reason for agreeing or disagreeing with the author/producer a comparison and/or contrast of a passage with another resource or with prior knowledge a prediction based on evidence from the resource a question generated as a result of reading, viewing, or hearing the resource a description of a personal experience that relates to the resource“http://www.maslibraries.org/infolit/samplers/spring/ doub.html - Cached
„So, as of yesterday, I’ve finally made the switch back to the Mac. Yesterday was the first day I came into the office with only a G4 laptop in my bag. There was no safety net to fall back into.“http://www.stopdesign.com/log/2003/10/31/ switchback.html - Cached

„If learning were easy, we would all be brilliant as writers, pianists, photographers, physicists, painters, at the many things we might want to be and do. We would be able to remember and still get “A+” marks on all those tests and papers upon which we received A+ marks in school. Why is it that only one person – John Taylor Gatto– is loudly and publicly ‘truth talking’ about the educational system and why schools are not ‘learning organizations”, why schools are not really even about learning and do not help us learn much at all, except how to be retarded emotionally and subservient socially?“http://www.internettime.com/lcmt/archives/ cat_blogging.html#000485 - Cached

„In all modes of instruction evaluation has important roles in efforts to assess student learning, to discover misconceptions among students, and to determine the effectiveness of programs (Doran & Hejaily, 1992). "As classroom teachers, we can praise hands-on experiential science, but until we can demonstrate that students are learning significantly more of the fundamental thinking skills of science, we cannot say that they have truly achieved science literacy" (Tetenbaum, 1992, p.12). Here we offer a variety of views on evaluation and assessment of hands-on learning and teaching.“http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/content/cntareas/science/.../ eric-6.htm - Cached

„Palm Hoops on the Run will be an opportunity to give students who cannot actually physically participate in a sport, the chance to get involved in an important but often overlooked aspect of that sport, namely statistics. We will implement the use of Palm OS Handheld Technology and software, as well as laptop technology and software to allow students to compile accurate statistical information both from live in-game experiences and from videotape. Students will design and build a new team Website for each team they are taking stats for, upload the most current stats to that Website several times during the week, maintain that Website from year to year and offer live in-game stat taking opportunities using that Website and the software this grant will provide for.“http://www.macul.org/newsletter/2003/winter2003/ grantwinners.html - Cached
„These "comparison studies" generally find either no significant differences in learning or significant differences in favor of the distance students (Chu & Schramm, 1975; Dillon & Strohmeyer, 1983; Hoyte & Frye, 1972; Whittington, 1987). Rarely investigated are factors such as the unique attributes of the technology (Denton & Clark, 1985), the type of learning outcome desired, or the methods utilized. As Chu and Schramm (1975) concluded some 15 years ago, the question that needs to be asked is not whether to use the technology, but rather how best to use it.“http://cade.athabascau.ca/vol6.1/8_dillon.html - Cached
„I finally have enough time to make an entry about what I have affectionately dubbed The Really Expensive Palm Experiment. „Hitting the thrusters with determination, he sent his mobile suit, newly dubbed moments before as Majestic, shooting forward to meet his fast approaching opponent. He pulled back the powerful arm holding the beam saber and, timing the moment perfectly, flipped his suit in midair to avoid the enemy's attack, ignoring the warning claxons the maneuver tripped and coming down from above the enemy, cut off the head of the attacking suit, effectively dismantling all of the enemy pilot's sensors and visuals. Putting most of the much relied on sensors was a design weakness they'd learned about in school even though they were never allowed to decapitate a practice suit to see the results of such a move.“http://www.1x2x1.org/fiction/dyna_dee/ inseperable15.htm - Cached
