GPRS for your PDA: CF adapter or cellphone?
Venky on 2003/08/10:
„In conclusion the option that works best for you depends on your current service and hardware inventory and also how much you are willing to invest in new hardware and service charges. I chose option 1 at the onset because my PDA at the time lacked built-in Bluetooth and I had no GSM service. Sometime later I signed up with T-Mobile and made sure my cellphone had Bluetooth capability ($150 for the SE T68i on eBay, unlocked for $15 at a local store). I recently switched to the iPAQ 2215 and since then option 3 has been the better solution.“

Some slightly related:
„This option is for those that have a BT-capable PDA and a BT-capable cellphone. It is the least expensive from a service standpoint because you only need to add data service to your existing cellphone service. If you're already a T-Mobile subscriber unlimited GPRS service is only $19.99 extra. I also find this option the most convenient if your PDA has BT built-in. No extra cards to carry around, no swapping CF cards or SIM cards, etc. I also expected to get better life on the PDA because the BT link to the cellphone requries less power than the GRPS link to the cellular base station. In unscientific measurements I found the CF GPRS card required 25% more power. [Unscientific because the measurements were based on looking at the battery meter after 30 mins of download tests.]“http://weblog.venky.ws/personal/archives/ cat_wireless.html#000045 - Cached

„I've used gprs over bluetooth with my cellphone. It worked just fine, although it was nothing like broadband speeds - which I have apparentlybecome quite accustomed to. Configuring bluetooth under linux is a littletricky (or was at the time) just because getting BlueZ or Affix to workwell is a little confusing - a few levels you have to initiate manuallybefore bringing the (in my case) ppp up.“http://lists.debian.org/debian-laptop/2004/04/ msg00229.html - Cached
„You can add extra battery life, CompactFlash cards, PC Cards, Digital Cameras, GPS, a GPS/GPRS phone and more. I'll review a few popular favorites that we've hands-on tested in this article. If there's a sleeve you'd like to see covered, drop me an email.“http://www.pdabuyersguide.com/tips/ ipaq_sleeves.htm - Cached
„I've been using my Dell Axim X5 extensively the past 6 months and have been generally happy with it. However it's just a little to heavy and a tad too big so it's not quite as convenient as carrying a cellphone. I really wanted something lighter and smaller but having just spent $300 on it and another $200 in add-ons and software I wasn't about to look for another one.“http://weblog.venky.ws/personal/archives/ 2003_07.html#000032 - Cached

„With Dell initially offering the X3 with Bluetooth in Europe, a big question is raised. Why not in the US? The reason I am thinking is market research.“http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread/ t-35397.html - Cached
„The h4155 (which has a 400MHz processor, 64MB of RAM, and both Bluetooth and WiFi built-in) has largely been overshadowed by some of the other handhelds that have come out recently, like Palm's Tungsten T3 and Dell's Axim X3i, but if Brighthand's enthusiasm is any indication, this one is not worth overlooking:They said it couldn't be done. That creating a pocketable, multimedia-capable handheld with a magnificent color screen, fast processor and, heaven forbid, two forms of wireless was an impossibility -- a contradiction of terms, so to speak. Well, it seems that no one informed HP of this apparent conundrum.“http://www.stargeek.com/item/25741.html - Cached
