First Linux-Based Tablet PC Needs Work

[Archived in Entry, Linux Pda, Sharp Zaurus Pda, Zaurus Pda]

First Linux-Based Tablet PC Needs Work jjbeard on 2003/10/22:

„Overall, it will be interesting to see if Linux-based tablets fare any better than the Linux-based PDA's, such as the Sharp Zaurus. While the Zaurus received many accolades upon its release due to its innovative design, it hasn't exactly soared in market share. I like the open source approach, but mainstream business users are going to need seamless integration with their everyday business apps for it to fly.“

Incremental Blogger: Linux Tablet PCs race to verticals?

„I agree with you, Loren, that Microsoft has real competition with Tablet-like designs. Since Microsoft is not planning major releases for two plus years other Operating System vendors - not just Linux - have a chance to offer and promote products at a faster release rate in response to 2 years worth of hardware changes (which is continual). I expect that these other vendors impact will potentially be greater on how people view, accept, and use Tablets than beating Microsoft per se.“

LinuxDevices.com Embedded Linux Newsletter -- June 26, 2003

„Linux-based STB boasts 1st DVD-quality video over Wi-Fi -- PRISMIQ announced the release of 802.11a/g Wi-Fi support for its Linux-based set-top "entertainment gateway". According to PRISMIQ, the 54 Mbps bandwidth available with 802.11g allows users of its "MediaPlayer" to stream high quality video files from the PC to the TV, and turns the MediaPlayer into "the first consumer set-top box to enable DVD-quality video over 802.11g wireless."  Story “

Tablet PC 2004 Update Rocks My World

„Now, to be fair to the Tablet PC, the fact that it recognizes anything at all is a major accomplishment. But, even if your handwriting is recognized 95% of the time, it's frustrating to use and slow. I keyboard at about 100 words per minute with nearly 100% accuracy (and without needing to look at my hands or think about the act of inputing).“

Who’s The Market For PC Tablets?

„Tablets are a tradeoff between screen size, weight, and battery power (like laptops).  But while laptops are only intended for use on some flat surface, some folks think they’re going to walk around and use a tablet held in their hand or propped on their arm.  Forget it.  Unless you’re a lot stronger than me (or a glutton for punishment), you’re not going to be doing much of that.  We proved ten years ago that human beings can’t hold a device in their hand and use it comfortably if it weighs more than a pound – these devices are in the 3-4 pound class.  On the other hand, they’re great for “corridor warriors – corporate types who spend most of the day out of their office but in the building, going from meeting to meeting.“

The Scobleizer Weblog

„(Imagine a retail salesperson who walks over with a tablet and searches a database for the sweater size you're looking for -- "oh, yes, Mr. Murphy, we have just that size in our Dublin store, would you like me to order it for you?") Are you a news station who has "news readers" who need to stand up on camera and have access to information? Do you have photographers who need to take pictures and show their work?“

„This Bozeman-based group has a two-person lab and does a lot of work for groups in Montana. ALso probably know the provider landscape out there pretty well. We've done a bunch of work with them.“

AVG Antivirus: a good, free alternative to Norton

„Someone mentioned that AVG isn't very good because it doesn't do automatic updates of virus definitions but it does. Once you set AVG up to do automatic updates that feature is no longer visible but it is working. When first setting this up you are given the option of how often you want updates, mine is set to get updates whenever the database is more than one day old.“

Site Reviews

„The eow service lives and dies on the breadth and quality of its reviews. I took it upon myself to search out new and interesting sites and provide reviews for one or two of them each day on my Internet Today daily Web rag. These aren't "sites of the day", chosen because of their superiority over the teeming masses on the Net -- they are Web sites that caught my attention, broke new ground, strive to be something different or provide a new service or spin on the Internet as a information medium.“
